أَمَرُّ

Full Definition

أَمَرُّ [More, or most, tightly twisted].
2 [Hence,] فُلَانٌ أَمَرُّ عَقْدًا مِنْ فُلَانٍ Such a one is firmer, and more faithful to his compact, than such a one.

def.2 More, or most, bitter: fem. مُرَّى: of which the dual is مُرَّيَانِ. You say, هٰذَا أَمَرُّ مِنْ ذَا [This is more bitter than that]. And خُذِ الحَلْوَى وَأَعْطِهِ المُرَّى [Take thou the sweeter, or sweetest, and give to him the bitterer, or bitterest]. (S in art. حلو.) And it is said in a prov., by a certain Arab woman, صُغْرَاهَا مُرَّاهَا [The youngest of them is the most bitter of them]. See Freytag's Arab. Prov., i. 720; where another reading is given, شُرَّاهَا for مُرَاهَّا.]
2 الأَمَرَّانِ Poverty and decrepitude: or decrepitude and disease.
3 Also, Aloes (الصَّبِرُ) and الثُّفَّآءُ, i. e., mustard: so in a trad.
4 You say also, لَقِيتُ مِنْهُ الأَمَرِّينَ, with the pl. ن, and with kesr to the ر, and الأَمَرَّيْنِ, dual of أَمَرُّ, with fet-h to the ر, and المُرَّيَيْنِ, dual of مُرَّى, or , I experienced from him, or it, calamities: or evil, and a grievous, or distressing, thing.
