2 اغمض عَيْنَيْهِ, or العَيْنَ, Verbal.Noun إِغْمَاضٌ; and , or غَمَّضَهَا, Verbal.Noun تَغْمِيضٌ; He shut, or closed, [his eyes, or] his eyelids, or [the eye, or] the eyelids.
3 [Hence,] مَا أَغْمَضْتُ, and مَا , I have not slept; and مَا [signifies the same]; and so مَا ٱكْتَحَلْتُ إِغْمَاضًا, and and تَغْمِيضًا, [two inf. ns. of 2,] and , and , and with damm, [and app. , and , and , for] IB says that غَمْضٌ and غُمُوضٌ and غُمَاضٌ are inf. ns. of a verb not used: and مَا ذُقْتُ, [in a copy of the A ,] and غَمَا , I have not tasted sleep. [And hence,] البَرْقُ The lightning ceased to gleam; as though sleeping.
4 You say also, اغمض طَرْفَهُ عَنِّى, and غمّضهُ , He shut, or closed, his eye, or eyes, at, or upon, or against, me: and اغمض عَلَيْهِ, and غمّض , he shut, or closed, his eyes at, or upon, or against, him, or it.
5 And [hence,] اغمض عَنْهُ, and عَلَيْهِ, [He shut his eyes at it, or upon it, or against it], namely a thing that he had heard: a metonymical phrase, denoting patience. And اغمض عَنْهُ He connived at it; feigned himself neglectful of it; passed it by; as also غمّض عَنْهُ, Verbal.Noun تَغْمِيضٌ; and
غَمَضَ ; and
; namely a thing that he had heard; and an evil action: and غمّض عَيْنَيْهِ عَنْهُ
he feigned himself blind to it. And اغمض عَنْهُ فِى البَيْعِ, or الشِّرَآءِ, He acted, or affected to act, in an easy, or a facile, manner towards him, (تَسَاهَلَ عَلَيْهِ,) in selling, or buying; as also
غَمَضَ عَنْهُ, Present.T
ـِ. And أَغْمِضْ لِى فِيمَا
بِعْتَنِى, in [some of] the copies of the K like اِضْرِبْ, [i. e.
,] but the former is the right reading, [though the latter is perhaps allowable, as will presently be seen,] meaning, or as though it meant, Give thou to me more of what thou hast sold to me, on account of its badness; or [so in the A, but in the S and K “ and, ”] lower thou to me the price thereof; as also لِى فِيهِ. And اغمض فِى البَيْعِ He demanded that another should give him more of the thing sold; and that he should lower the price [thereof]; and he complied with his demand. And اغمض فِى السِّلْعَةِ He demanded a lowering of the price of the commodity, on account of its badness. It is said in the Kur [ii. 270], وَلَسْتُمْ بِآخِذِيهِ إِلَّا أَنْ تُغْمِضُوا فِيهِ, or, accord. to one reading, , i. e. When ye do not take it unless ye lower the price; meaning, عَلَى
إِغْمَاضٍ, or بِإِغْمَاضٍ.
6 [Hence also,] فُلَانٌ عَلَى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ Such a one executed, performed, or accomplished, this affair: or kept, or applied himself, constantly, or perseveringly, to it; (مَضَى عَلَيْهِ;) [as though he shut his eyes at it;] knowing what was in it. And النَّاقَةُ, Verbal.Noun تَغْمِيضٌ, The she-camel, being driven away (رُدَّتْ, as in the K, and in some copies of the S, or ذِيدَتْ, as in other copies of the S, and in the A, as is said in the TA,) from the watering-trough, rushed upon the driver, (الذَّائِد, [in the CK, erroneously, الزائِد,]) closing her eyes, and came to the water.
تَغْمِيضٌ also signifies The embarking [in an affair], or undertaking [it], blindly.
7 [Hence also,] أَغْمَضَتِ المَفَازَةُ عَلَيْهِمْ [The desert concealed them;] they did not appear in the desert, being concealed by the mirage, and in the depressed parts; as though it closed its eyelids upon them.
8 اغمض النَّظَرَ He considered, or judged, well, and gave a good opinion: and اغمض فِى النَّظَرِ he gave a right opinion: or he considered, or judged, minutely.
9 أَغْمَضَتِ العَيْنُ فُلَانًا The eye despised such a one: or you say أَغْمَضَتْهُ عَيْنِى meaning I despised him:
10 and likewise meaning I vied, or contended, in running with him, (حَاضَرْتُهُ,) and outstripped him, after he had outstripped me: or اغمض فُلَانٌ فُلَانًا means Such a one vied, or contended, in running with such a one, (حَاضَرَهُ,) and outstripped him, after
having been outstripped by him.
11 اغمض المَيِّتَ, Verbal.Noun إِغْمَاضٌ; and , Verbal.Noun as above; He closed the eyelids of the dead man.
