بَصِيرَةٌ

Root: بصر

Full Definition

بَصِيرَةٌ , in the Kur [lxxv. 14], means Nay, the man shall be witness against himself: or it means that his arms, or hands, and his legs, or feet, and his tongue, shall be witnesses against him on the day of resurrection: Akh says that it is like the saying to a man, أَنْتَ حُجَّةٌ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ: the ة is added because the members are meant thereby; or to give intensiveness to the signification, as in عَلَّامَةٌ and رَاوِيَةٌ; or because the meaning is عَيْنٌ بَصِيرَةٌ. You say also, اِجْعَلْنِى بَصِيرَةً عَلَيْهِمْ Make thou me an observer of them and a witness against them.
2 An example by which one is admonished: pl. بَصَائِرُ; which is said to be used agreeably with this interpretation in the Kur xxviii. 43. You say, أَمَا لَكَ بَصِيرَةٌ فِيهِ Hast thou not an example whereby thou shouldst be admonished in him?

def.2 A shield: or a glistening shield: or an oblong shield: and a coat of mail: and any defensive armour: and بَصَائِرُ السِّلَاحِ any arms that are worn: and بِصَارٌ, as well as بَصَائِرُ, is a pl. thereof. Accord. to AO, the verse of El-Joafee cited above commences thus: حَمَلُوا بَصَائِرَهُمْ عَلَى أَكْتَافِهِمْ and the meaning is, [They bore] their shields [upon their shoulder-blades]; or their coats of mail.

def.3 An oblong piece of cloth of cotton or other material. [See بُصْرٌ.] Such is hung upon the door of a dwelling. And you say, رَأَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ بَصِيرَةً, i. e. شُقَّةً مُلَفَّقَةً [app. meaning I saw upon him a garment composed of two oblong pieces of cloth joined and sewed together].
2 What is between the two oblong pieces of cloth [i. e. between any two of such pieces] of a بَيْت [or tent]; and what is between the two pieces of a مَزَادَة and the like; what is sewed, thereof, in the manner termed بَصْرٌ [Verbal.Noun of بَصَرَ: see 1, last sentence]: pl. بَصَائِرُ: and بَاصِرٌ signifies [in like manner] what is joined and sewed together (مُلَفَّق) between two oblong pieces of cloth or two pieces of rag.
