Full Definition

جَحَرَI , Present.T ـَ; and , and تجحّر , and , said of a [lizard of the kind called] ضَبّ, and of a jerboa, and of a serpent, [&c., (see جُحْرٌ,)] It entered its burrow, or hole; betook itself to it for refuge; or resorted to it.
2 [Hence,] جَحَرَتْ عَيْنُهُ [and تجحّرت or (see جَحْرَآءُ)] His eye sank, or became depressed, in his head.
3 جَحَرَتِ الشَّمْسُ لِلْغُيُوبِ [The sun set, or became near to setting].
4 And جَحَرَتِ الشَّمْسُ The sun rose high, so that the shade receded and contracted.
5 حَجَرَ said of a man, He retreated, or retired; remained behind; or held back.
6 جَحَرَ الرَّبِيعُ The [rain called] ربيع withheld itself: [or] the [season called] ربيع did not give us rain.
7 And جَحَرَ عَنَّا الخَيْرُ Good, or prosperity, kept back from us, and did not betide us.
