جَفَأَ

Full Definition

جَفَأَ , Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun جَفْءٌ, It cast forth froth, or foam, and particles of rubbish or refuse; as also ; but this latter is said in the O to be of weak authority. And جَفَأَتِ القِدْرُ, and , The cooking-pot cast forth its froth, or foam, in boiling: or جفأت بِزَبَدِهَا it cast forth its froth, or foam: originally جَفَت and اجفت, without ء. (Er-Rághib, TA in art. جفو.)

def.2 جَفَأَ الوَادِى, or جَفَأَ الغُثَآءَ عَنِ الوَادِى, He swept off the scum and rubbish of the valley [after it had flowed, or while it was flowing, with water]. And جَفَأَ القِدْرَ He cleared off the froth, or foam, of the cooking-pot.
2 Also جَفَأَ القِدْرَ, Verbal.Noun as above; and ; but the former is that which is commonly known; the latter is rare; or the latter should not be said, though it occurs in a trad., accord. to one relation; He turned the cooking-pot upsidedown, or inclined it, and poured out what was in it: or he emptied the cooking-pot, and turned it upside-down: and جَفَأَ البُرْمَةَ فِى القَصْعَةِ He turned the cookingpot upside-down upon the bowl.
3 جَفَأَهُ, [like حَفَأَهُ,] and جَفَأَ بِهِ الأَرْضَ, He threw him down, or prostrated him, on the ground: namely, a man: and بِهِ [signifies the same; or] he threw him, or it, on the ground.
