Full Definition

جَفَّةٌ and جُفَّةٌ , but the latter is rare, and جُفٌّ and جَفٌّ , A company of men or people; a collective body thereof: or a great number thereof. You say, دُعِيتُ فِى جَفَّةِ النَّاسِ [I was summoned, or invited, among the collective body of people]. And جَاؤُوا جَفّةً وَاحِدَةً They came in one collective body. لَا نَفَلَ فِى غَنِيمَةٍ حَتَّى تُقْسَمَ جَفَّةً, or , means [There shall be no gift of spoil] until it is divided altogether: a saying of Ibn-'Abbás: accord. to one reading, عَلَى , i. e., [until it is divided] among the collective body of the army first. appears to have read, لَا تَقُلْ فِى غَنَمٍ; and hence to have said, of جَفَّةٌ, erroneously, " de pecore non dicitur nisi totus grex sit."])
