Full Definition

جَلْسٌ Rugged ground or land: this is the primary signification.
2 [Also, app., Elevated ground or land:] a place elevated and hard: or, as some say, a tract of land extending widely.
3 [And hence,] الجَلْسُ What is elevated above the غَوْر [or low country]: applied especially to the country of Nejd.

def.2 [Persons sitting: or sitting up:] a quasi-pl. n., accord. to Sb, or a pl., accord. to Akh, of جَالِسٌ : said to be used as sing. and pl. and fem. and masc.; but this assertion is of no account: or the people of a مَجْلِس: [ جُلُوسٌ is also a pl. of جَالِسٌ ; like as بُكِىٌّ, originally بُكُوىٌ, is of بَاكِ: or it is an Verbal.Noun used as an epithet: see جَاثٍ:)] you say قَوْمٌ جُلُوسٌ [a company of men sitting: or sitting up]. 2 Also A woman who sits in the فِنَآء [or court of the house], not quitting it: or she who is of noble rank among her people.
