Full Definition

حَذَاI , [Present.T يَحْذُو,] Verbal.Noun حَذْوٌ and حِذَآءٌ, He measured the sandal, or sole, or made it according to a measure; and cut it according to a pattern: or he made the sandal, or sole, لِى for me. And حَذَا النَّعْلَ بِالمِثَالِ He cut the sandal, or sole, by the pattern. And حَذَا النَّعْلَ بِالنَّعْلِ, Verbal.Noun حَذْوٌ, He measured the sandal, or sole, by the sandal, or sole; or made it according to the measure thereof; and cut it according to the pattern and measure thereof: and in like manner, حَذَا القُذَّةَ بِالقُذَّةِ He measured the feather for an arrow by the feather for an arrow; or made it according to the measure thereof. Hence the prov., حَذْوَ القُذَّةِ [meaning With like for like]. And the saying, جَزَيْتُهُ حَدْوَالنَّعْلِ بِالنَّعْلِ, meaning I requited him [with like for like]. One says also, هُوَ جَيَّدُ الحِذَآءِ He is good in respect of proportion, or conformation. And [in like manner] a beast is said to be حَسَنُ الحِذَآءِ Goodly, or beautiful, in respect of proportion, or conformation. (TA in art. حذى.)
2 [And hence,] حَذَاحَذْوَ زَيْدٍ [He did as Zeyd did;] he did the deed of Zeyd. And احتذى مِثَالَهُ, or عَلَى مِثَالِهِ, He followed, or imitated, his example in his affair, or case: or احتذى بِهِ he followed, or imitated, his example in his affairs: syn. اقتدى.

4 حَذَاهُ نَعْلًا He put on him a sandal; as also احذاهُ : the former is authorized by As, but the latter is disallowed by him: Az explains the former by حمله على نعل [as though meaning he gave him a sandal upon which to walk; like as حَمَلَهُ for حَمَلَهُ عَلَى دَابَّةٍ means “ he gave him a beast upon which to ride ”]: and accord. to J, نَعْلًا signifies I gave him a sandal.
5 حَذَا زَيْدًا, Verbal.Noun حَذْوٌ, He gave to Zeyd. (K, TA. [See also 4 in art. حذى.])
6 حَذَامِنْهُ حِذْوَةً He cut off from it a piece of flesh-meat.
7 حَذَا الجِلْدَ, Present.T يَحْذُو, i. q. قَوَّرَهُ [He cut a piece out of the skin, generally meaning in a round form].
8 حَذَا لسَانَهُ, Present.T as above, Verbal.Noun حَذُوٌ, It bit his tongue; a dial. var. of حَذَى, Present.T يَحْذى, which is the word well known.
