حِضْنٌ

Full Definition

حِضْنٌ The part beneath the armpit, extending to the كَشْح [or flank]: or the bosom, or breast; syn. صَدْر: [الصَّدْرِ in the CK should be الصَّدْرُ:] and the upper arms with what is between them: and مُحْتَضَنٌ signifies the same: pl. of the former أَحْضَانٌ [and accord. to Freytag's Lex. حُضُونٌ also].
2 The side of a thing, and of a man: the lateral, or adjacent, part of a thing: pl. أَحْضَانٌ. حِضْنَا المَفَازَةِ means The two borders [the nearer border and the further] of the desert. And حِضْنَا اللَّيْلِ The two sides [or first and last portions] of the night. And [as the حِضْن of a man or woman is often a place of concealment,] one says, مَا زَالَ يَقْطَعُ أَحْضَانَ اللَّيْلِ [meaning He ceased not to traverse the shades of the night]. عَلَيْكُمْ بِالحِضْنَيْنِ, in a trad. of 'Alee, means [Keep ye to] the two wings of the army. You say also, أَخَذَ فُلَانٌ حَقَّهُ عَلَى حِضْنِهِ, i. e. Such a one took his right, or due, by force.
3 Also The quantity that is carried in the حِضْن.
4 Also, and حُضْنٌ , The hole, or den, or subterranean habitation, of the hyena: or the place of hunting, or of capture, of the hyena.
5 And, both these words, The circuit, or surrounding part, of a mountain: or its base; or lower, or lowest, part. Accord. to Az, حِضْنَا الجَبَلِ means The two lateral, or adjacent, parts of the mountain.
