Form: 1

Full Definition

حَطَّهُI , Present.T حَطُطَ Verbal.Noun حَطٌّ, He put it down, syn. وَضَعَهُ, and أَنْزَلَهُ, from a high to a lower place; namely a load, or any other thing from a back; a camel's saddle, or other thing; a horse's saddle; and a bow; as also . You say, حَطَّ الأَحْمَالَ عَنِ الدَّوَابِّ He put down the loads from the beasts. And حَطَّ عَنْهُ وِزْرَهُ [He put down from him his heavy burden: or his heavy burden of sin]: if a real load be intended, this is proper; but if an ideal thing, it is tropical; [as when you say,] حُطَّ عَنَّا ذُنُوبَنَا [ Put Thou down from us the burden of our sins]. And حَطَّ رَحْلَهُ [lit. He put down his camel's saddle;] meaning he stayed, or abode. And حَطَّ alone, [elliptically,] He alighted; or alighted and abode; فِى مَكَانٍ in a place.
2 He threw it down; namely a thing. [He paid it down; namely money.]
3 He made it to descend, or to go down, or downwards, or down a declivity, from above to below. Imra-el-Keys says, [describing a horse in motion,] كَجُلْمُودِ صَخْرٍ حَطَّهُ السَّيْلُ مِنْ عَلِ [Like a mass of rock which the torrent has made to descend from above].
4 [ He lowered him, or degraded him.]
5 حَطَّ مِنَ الثَّمَنِ كَذَا He abated of the price so much; syn. أَسْقَطَ; لَهُ to him. And حَطَّ مِنْهُ حَطِيطَةً وَافِيَةً [He made a large abatement of it]. [See حَطِيطَةٌ.] And حَطَطْتُ مِنَ الدَّيْنِ I abated [somewhat] of the debt. [See also 10.]
6 حَطَّهُ is also syn. with حَتَّهُ: as in a trad. where it is said of Mohammad, that he sat by a dry branch of a tree, فَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ وَ حَطَّ وَرَقَهَا [And he made a sign with his hand, and removed its leaves]; meaning, scattered its leaves. And so in the phrase, الزُّبْدُ يُحَطُّ عَنِ اللَّبَنِ [The froth is removed, or skimmed off, from the milk].

def.2 حَطَّ السِّعْرُ, Present.T حَطِطَ (L, TA, [but I think it more probable that the Present.T is حَطِطَ agreeably with analogy, like as some say of قَطَّ, which, accord. to Sh, signifies the same, or nearly so, but accord. to others, the contr. of حَطَّ,] Verbal.Noun حَطٌّ and حُطُوطٌ, The price was, or became, low, or cheap; it abated; (Fr, TA in art. قط;) and so انحطّ .

def.3 حَطَّ البَعِيرُ, فِى السَيْرِ, Verbal.Noun حِطَاطٌ, The camel bore upon his nose-rein towards one side, in going; as also انحطّ : or, accord. to AA, انحطّت النَّاقَةُ فِى سَيْرِهَا signifies the she-camel was quick in her pace; and so حَطَّت: and حِطَاطٌ also signifies vehement running. [From what next follows, it seems that the verb in this sense is of the measure فَعِلَ, Present.T حَطَطَ .]
2 The poet 'Amr-Ibn-El-Ahtam uses the phrase, حَطِّى فِى هَوَاىَ, meaning Rest thou upon my love, and incline my way. And it is said in a trad., فَحَطَّتْ إِلَى الشَّابِّ And she inclined with her heart towards the youth.
3 حَطَّ فِى عِرْضِ فُلَانٍ He launched forth into, or pressed on in, the reviling of such a one.
4 حَطَّ فِى الطَّعَامِ He ate the food; as also , Verbal.Noun تَحْطِيطٌ: or he ate much of the food.

def.4 حَطَّ الجِلْدَ, Verbal.Noun حَطٌّ, He polished, or smoothed, the skin; and figured, or decorated, it; and ruled it, or made lines upon it; with the مِحَطّ.
