Full Definition

ذَرِبَI , Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun ذَرَبٌ and ذَرَابَةٌ, said of a sword, and a spear-head, or of a thing of any kind, It was, or became, sharp, and cutting, or penetrating: or, said of a sword, and of a spear-head, it signifies [or signifies also] it was steeped in, or imbued with, poison.
2 ذَرِبَ لِسَانُهُ, Present.T as above, [and so the Verbal.Noun], His tongue was, or became, sharp [properly speaking, i. e. sharp in the extremity: (see ذَرِبٌ:) and also tropically, i. e., in a good sense, as meaning chaste, or eloquent; without barbarousness, or vitiousness, or impediment: and in a bad sense, as meaning profuse of speech; or clamorous: bad, or corrupt: foul, unseemly, or obscene]: he cared not what he said. [For] ذَرَبٌ and ذَرَابَةٌ signify Sharpness of the tongue [properly speaking, or, as is said in the A, tropically]: and the former, or the latter, [or each.] metaphorically, chasteness, or eloquence, thereof; without barbarousness, or vitiousness, or impediment; a quality approved: and profuseness, or clamorousness, thereof; a quality disapproved: and the former, [or each,] badness, or corruptness, thereof: and the former, or the latter, or each, foulness, or obscenity, thereof: and the pl. of the former [used as a simple subst.] is أَذْرَابٌ. A poet says, namely, Hadramee Ibn-'Ámir El-Asadee, وَلَقَدْ طَوَيْتُكُمُ عَلَى بُلَلَاتِكُمْ وَ عَرَفْتُ مَا فِيكُمْ مِنَ الأَذْرَابِ [And I have borne with you not withstanding your vices and evil actions, and have known what is in you of foul, or obscene, qualities of the tongue]; [or] على بُلَلَاتِكُمْ means notwithstanding what is in you of annoyance and enmity: but accord. to Th, he said, الأَعْيَابِ, pl. of عَيْبٌ. [Accord. to Z,] فِيهِمْ أَذْرَابٌ means In them are [qualities that are] causes of evil, corruption, wrong, injury, or the like.
3 ذَرِبَتْ مَعِدَتُهُ, Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun ذَرَبٌ and ذَرَابَةٌ and ذُرُوبَةٌ, His stomach was, or became, sharp, or keen, by reason of hunger: [or] his stomach was, or became, in a good, or right, state: and also, his stomach was, or became, in a bad, or corrupt, state: thus having two contr. significations.
4 ذَرِبَ الجُرْحُ, Verbal.Noun ذَرَبٌ, The wound admitted not of cure: or was, or became, in a bad, or corrupt, state, and wide, and admitted not of cure: or flowed with صَدِيد [i. e. ichor tinged with blood].
5 ذَرِبَ أَنْفُهُ, Verbal.Noun ذَرَابَةٌ, His nose dripped; let fall drops.

2 [Hence,] ذَرَبْتُ فُلَانًا I excited, or provoked, [or exasperated,] such a one. And فُلَانٌ يَضْرِبُ بَيْنَنَا وَيَذْرِبُ [app. Such a one makes a separation between us, (see ضَرَبَ,) and excites discord: يَذْرِبُ is perhaps here used for يَذْرُبُ, to assimilate it to يَضْرِبُ].
