Full Definition

سَفَّI , Present.T سَفُفَ Verbal.Noun سَفُّ; and اسفّ , Verbal.Noun إِسْفَافٌ; He wove with his fingers [or plaited] a mat, or palm-leaves, and any other thing that may be woven with the fingers; like رَمَلَ and أَرْمَلَ.

def.2 سَفَّ عَلَى وَجْهِ الأرْضِ, [Present.T سَفُفَ accord. to the TK, but more probably سَفِفَ agreeably with a general rule relating to intrans. verbs of this class,] Verbal.Noun سَفِيفٌ, He went along upon the surface of the earth. [See also 4.]

def.3 سَفِفْتُ, third pers. سَفَّ, Present.T أَسَفُّ, Verbal.Noun سَفٌّ; and ; (S, M, Msb, K; [in one of my copies of the S, erroneously, أَسْفَفْتُ;]) I took [into my mouth], or ate, medicine, and meal of parched barley or wheat, and the like of either of these, or anything dry, not moistened, and not kneaded [with water &c.]; or i. q. قَمِحْتُ, which signifies as above, or I took it in the palm of my hand, (A and L in art. قمح,) and conveyed it to my mouth, or licked it up: and سَفَّةٌ signifies the doing thus once. And [hence,] سَفٌّ signifies also Camels' eating dry herbage. Hence the saying of 'Amr Ibn-Kulthoom, تَسَفُّ الجِلَّةُ الخُورُ الدَّرِينَا The she-camels advanced in age, abounding with milk, eating the [dry and] old and wasted herbage. Hence also the phrase, لَأَنْ أَسَفَّ التُّرَابَ Assuredly that I should eat the dust.
2 And سَفِفْتُ المَآءَ, Present.T أَسَفُّ, Verbal.Noun سَفٌّ, I drank much of the water without satisfying my thirst: and so سَفِتُّهُ, Present.T أَسْفَتُهُ, Verbal.Noun سَفْتٌ.
