شَنَّ

Root: شن

Form: 1

Full Definition

شَنَّI , Present.T شَنُنَ Verbal.Noun شَنٌّ, He scattered the water; or poured it scatteringly; or poured it and scattered it; or, as some say, poured it in a manner like that which is termed نَضْحٌ [i. e. sprinkling]; عَلَى الشَّرَابِ [upon the wine, or beverage]: سَنَّهُ signifies “ he poured it gently. ” And شَنَّتِ العَيْنُ دَمْعَهَا The eye poured forth its tears; or sent forth [or shed] its tears; like شَلَّت, (Lh, TA in art. شل,) which is asserted by Yaakoob to be formed by substitution [of ل for ن].
2 And, from the former, شَنَّ الغَارَةَ, Present.T and Verbal.Noun as above, He scattered, or poured, the horsemen making a raid, or sudden attack, and engaging in conflict, or the horsemen urging their horses, الغَارَةَ meaning الخَيْلَ المُغِيرَةَ, from every direction, عَلَيْهِمْ [upon them]; as also ; the latter mentioned in the Mj, by IF, but disapproved by the people of chaste speech.
3 And شَنَّ بِسَلْحِهِ He cast forth his excrement, or dung, in a thin [and scattered] state: and one says of the حُبَارَى [or bustard] تَشُنُّ بِذَرْقِهَا [It casts forth its dung in a thin and scattered state].
4 And شَنَّ عَلَيِْهِ دِرْعَهُ He put on him his coat of mail.

def.2 شَنَّ الجَمَلُ مِنَ العَطَشِ, [Present.T accord. to general rule شَنِنَ ] The camel became dried up [like a شَنّ, q. v.,] from thirst. And شَنَّتِ الخِرْقَةُ The rag became dried up.
