Full Definition

صَلُبَI , [Present.T ـُ] Verbal.Noun صَلَابَةٌ; and صَلِبَ, Present.T ـَ; and صلّب , Verbal.Noun تَصْلِيبٌ; said of a thing, [and of a man,] It [and he] was, or became, hard, firm, rigid, stiff, tough, strong, robust, sturdy, or hardy; syn. اِشْتَدَّ; contr. of لَانَ.
2 [Hence,] صَلُبَتِ الأَرْضُ مُنْذُ أَعْوَامٍ [The land has been hard by lying waste for years]; said of land that has not been sown for a long time.
3 And صَلُبَ عَلَى المَالِ, Verbal.Noun as above, He was, or became, tenacious, or avaricious, of property, or the property.
4 [And صَلُبَ الشَّرَابُ, Verbal.Noun as above, The wine became strong. (حَدُّ الشَّرَابِ is expl. in the S and L, in art. حد, as meaning صَلَابَتُهُ.)]

def.2 صَلَبَ العِظَامَ, Present.T ـِ Verbal.Noun صَلْبٌ; and ; He cooked, or collected and cooked, the bones, and extracted their grease, or oily matter, to make use of it as a seasoning: or [alone] he extracted the grease, or oily matter, of bones, or he collected bones, and extracted their grease, or oily matter, to make use of it as a seasoning.
2 And in like manner one says of one who roasts, or broils, or fries, flesh-meat and makes its grease to flow: i. e. one says, صَلَبَ اللَّحْمَ, and [alone], He roasted, or broiled, or fried, the flesh-meat, and made its grease to flow.
3 And, as Sh says, , صَلَبَهُ, Present.T ـِ and ـُ Verbal.Noun صَلْبٌ, He, or it, burned him: and صَلَبَتْهُ الشَّمْسُ The sun burned him [app. causing his sweat to flow].
4 And صَلَبَهُ, Present.T ـِ Verbal.Noun صَلْبٌ; and صلّبهُ , Verbal.Noun تَصْلِيبٌ, or the verb with teshdeed is said of a pl. number; [He crucified him;] he put him to death in a certain well-known manner; he made him to be مَصْلُوب; namely, one who had slain another; or a thief: from صَلَبَ العِظَامَ; because the oily matter, and the ichor mixed with blood, of the person so put to death flows.
5 [Hence] الصَّلْبُ in prayer means The placing the hands upon the flanks, in standing, and separating the arms from the body: a posture forbidden by the Prophet because resembling that of a man when he is crucified (إِذَا صُلِبَ), the arms of the man in this case being extended upon the timber.
6 [Hence also,] صَلَبَ الدَّلْوَ, and , He put upon the دلو [or leathern bucket] what are called , which are two pieces of wood placed cross-wise [to keep it from collapsing], like what are called the عَرْقُوَتَانِ.

def.3 صَلَبَتْ عَلَيْهِ حُمَّاهُ, Present.T ـِ His fever was continual, and vehement: or was of the kind termed صَالِب [q. v.].
