Full Definition

عَسَّI , Present.T عَسُسَ Verbal.Noun عَسٌّ and عَسَسٌ; and ; He went roundabout, patrolled, or went the rounds, by night, to guard the people: he made search by night after suspicious persons, or persons to be suspected, and investi- gated, or discovered, their opinions, or sentiments: he went to and fro; syn. اِخْتَلَفَ. It is said in a prov., كَلْبٌ عَسَّ خَيْرٌ مِنْ كَلْبٍ رَبَضَ, or ; or, as some relate it, عَاسٌّ, and رَابِضٍ; [A dog that has gone the rounds by night is better than a dog that has lain down; or a dog going the rounds &c.;] said for the purpose of urging to make gain: meaning that he who occupies himself in business is better than he who lacks power or ability: or, as some relate it, كَلْبٌ عَسَّ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَسَدٍ ٱنْدَسَّ [a dog that has gone the rounds by night is better than a lion that has hidden himself]; alluding to the superiority of the weak who occupies himself in making gain over the strong who holds back. You also say of a wolf, and of any beast of prey, عَسْعَسَ , meaning, He went roundabout by night, seeking for prey: and تَعَسْعَسَ he sought for prey by night: and he [a man] sought, sought after, or sought to gain, sustenance: and تَعَسْعَسَ he smelt [app. to find prey].

2 عَسَّتْ, Present.T عَسُسَ She yielded little milk, though her milk had collected in her udder since the next previous milking.
3 And عَسَّتْ, Present.T عَسُسَ Verbal.Noun عِسَاسٌ, She grumbled much on being milked. Hence, دَرَّتْ عِسَاسًا She yielded her milk unwillingly.
4 And عَسَّتْ, Present.T عَسُسَ Verbal.Noun عَسٌّ, She pastured alone.
5 And عَسَّ عَلَىَّ بِخَيْرِهِ He was parsimonious to me with his wealth.

def.3 عَسَّهُ, Present.T عَسُسَ Verbal.Noun عَسٌّ; and ; He sought, or sought for or after, him [or it]: or the latter, he sought, or sought for or after, it by night. You say, ذَهَبَ يَعُسُّ صَاحِبَهُ He went away seeking his companion. And الإِبِلَ وَلَا قِسَاسًا فَمَا وَجَدْنَا We sought for the camels, or sought for them by night, and found not any trace. And فُلَانٌ الآثَارَ Such a one traces footsteps. And الفُجُورَ He follows vice, immorality, or unrighteousness.
