Verbal.Noun عَطٌّ, He slit, or rent, the garment, or piece of cloth, lengthwise, or breadthwise, without separation, but not heard by Mtr as meaning breadthwise in chaste language; like
; or this, of which the Verbal.Noun is تَعْطِيطٌ and تَعْطَاطٌ also, is with teshdeed to denote muchness [of the action], or multiplicity [of the objects]: and الثَّوْبَ signifies [the same, or simply] he slit, or rent, the garment, or piece of cloth. El-Mufaddal is related to have said that he had read in a copy of the Kur-án, [in xii. 28,] فَلَمَّا رَأَى قَمِيصَهُ عُطَّ مِنْ دُبُرٍ [And when he saw that his shirt was rent in the hinder part].
