غَامِضٌ
[Unperceived; unapparent; hidden, or concealed. ]
2 Unapparent to the mind, not plain or perspicuous, obscure, recondite, or abstruse, speech, or language. You say also, مَعْنًى غَامِضٌ A nice, subtile, or quaint, meaning. And مَسْأَلَةٌ غَامِضَةٌ A question in which is matter for consideration, and subtility, or nicety. And مَسْأَلَةٌ فِيهَا غَوَامِضُ [A question in which are obscurities, abstrusities, subtilities, or niceties: the last word being pl. of غَامِضَةٌ , an epithet in which the quality of a subst. predominates].
3 Obscure; not well known: or not known: applied to rank or quality (حَسَب), or to parentage or relationship (نَسَب): pl. أَغْمَاضٌ, like as أَصْحَابٌ is pl. of صَاحِبٌ: or, as some say, this is pl. of غَمْضٌ .
4 Obscure, or of no reputation; low, mean, or vile; applied to a man: such is termed ذُو , also. [And hence, perhaps,] A man remiss in the charge, or in rushing on the enemy: pl. غَوَامِضُ [which is anomalous, like فَوَارِسُ &c.].
5 Low, or depressed; applied to land, and a place; [because unseen from a distance;] as also غَمْضٌ ; applied to a place: or this latter signifies land very low, or very much depressed, so that what is in it is not seen: and in like manner مَغْمَضٌ , a place more depressed than what is termed غَمْضٌ: pl. of the first, غَوَامِضُ: and of ↓ the second, أَغْمَاضٌ [a pl. of pauc.] and غُمُوضٌ: and of the third, مَغَامِضُ.
6 An anklet depressed, lit. choked, (غَاصٌّ, [in the CK غاضّ,]) in the leg: and, applied to an ankle-bone, concealed by the flesh: or fat: and in this latter sense applied to a leg, or shank.
7 A house not upon a common thoroughfare-road or street; retired therefrom.
