وَرْدٌ

Full Definition

وَرْدٌ [coll. gen. n.] The flower, or blossom, of any tree or plant: but its predominant application is to the rose حَوْجَم, the well-known red flower which one smells: its colour varies in winter and summer: and it is of different kinds in the cultivated soil and in the desert and in the mountains: n. un. with ة. Said to be an arabicized word.
2 وَرْدٌ A horse [of a bright, or yellowish, bay colour;] of a colour between that called كُمَيْت and أَشْقَر: a horse, or other thing. of a red colour inclining to yellow, beautiful in everything: fem. with ة: applied in the above sense to the sky, in the Kur, lv. 37: or it there means roseates, or of a rosecolour: pl. وُرْدٌ, like as جُونٌ is pl. of جَوْنٌ, and وِرَادٌ and أَوْرَادٌ: but this last is unknown, and app. a mistake.
3 وَرْدٌ A lion of the colour termed وَرْد: or a lion; as also مُتَوَرِّدٌ .
4 عَشِيَّةٌ وَرْدَةٌ An evening when the horizon is red at sunset; which is a sign of drought: and in like manner the morning at sunrise.
5 لَيْلَةٌ وَرْدَةٌ A night of which the beginning and end are red; which is the case in a time of drought.
6 وَرْدٌ Bold, or daring; an epithet applied to a man; as also وَارِدٌ .
7 وَرْدٌ Saffron.
8 الوَرْدُ الجَبَلِىُّ: see عَبَالٌ.
9 أَبُو الوَرْدِ The penis: so called because of its redness.
