أَبٌّ

Full Definition

أَبٌّ Herbage, whether fresh or dry: or pasture, or herbage which beasts feed upon, of whatever kind, [or] not sown by men: it is, to cattle and other beasts, what fruit is to men: or whatever grows upon the face of the earth; whatever vegetable the earth produces: and also, green herbage, or plants: and, as some say, straw, because cattle eat it: or herbage prepared for pasture and for cutting: accord. to IF, dried fruits; because prepared for winter and for journeying: pl. [of pauc.] أَوُبٌّ, originally أَأْبُبٌ. You say, فُلَانٌ رَاعَ لَهُ الحَبُّ وَطَاعَ لَهُ الأَبُّ, meaning Such a one's seed-produce [or grain] increased, and his pasture became ample.
