Full Definition

أُسْقُفٌّ and أُسْقُفٌ , as also سَقْفٌ and سَقْفٌ , [each a variation of] a foreign word used by the Arabs, [from the Greek ἐπίσκοπος, A bishop; i. e.] a headman of the Christians in religion; or [more exactly] one who is above the قِسِيس [i. e. presbyter, or priest], and below the مَطْرَان [or metropolitan]: or one who is learned in their religion: or a king who affects lowliness in his gait: pl. أَسَاقِفَةٌ and أَسَاقِفُ.
