أَمْلَسُ

Root: ملس

Full Definition

أَمْلَسُ Smooth; sleek; free from asperities; [contr. of خَشِنٌ;] having in it nothing upon which to lay hold; smooth to the feel; and مَلِيسٌ signifies the same; and مَلْسٌ [in like manner], anything smooth or soft: fem. of the first, مَلْسَآءُ: and pl. مُلْسٌ. You say, ثَوْبٌ أَمْلَسُ [A smooth garment, or piece of cloth]. And صَخْرَةٌ مَلْسَآءُ [A smooth rock]. And قَوْسٌ مَلْسَآءُ and مَلِيسٌ A bow in which is no crack. And ضَرَبَهُ عَلَى مَلْسَآءِ مَتْنِهِ and He struck him upon the even and smooth part of his back.
2 A camel having a sound back, free from mange or scab. So in the proverb, هَانَ عَلَى الأَمْلَسِ مَا لَاقَى الدَّبِرُ [What he that had galls on his back experienced was a light matter to him that had a sound back]: applied to him who has an ill concern for his companion.
3 أَرْضٌ مَلْسَآءُ: see إِمْلِيسٌ.
4 سَنَةٌ مَلْسَآءُ A year without herbage: or a year of sterility: pl. أَمَالِيسُ, contr. to rule.
5 المَلْسَآءُ The lowest heaven. (TA, art. جرب.)
6 قَهْوَةٌ مَلْسَآءُ or خَمْرٌ مَلْسَآءُ Wine easy to swallow; wine that descends easily in the throat.
7 مَلْسَآءُ [as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. predominates] Sour milk with which pure [fresh] milk is mixed; as also مُلَيْسَآءُ .
8 جِلْدُهُ أَمْلَسُ He has no blame attaching to him.
9 خِمْسٌ أَمْلَسُ A fatiguing, severe [journey such as is called] خمس.
