Full Definition

أَصُلَI , Verbal.Noun أَصَالَةٌ; or أَصِلَ; It had, or came to have, root, or a foundation; as also تأصّل : or it was, or became, firm, or established, and firmly rooted or founded; as also تأصّل : and [in like manner] استأصل it was, or became, firm in its root or foundation, and strong. You say, الشَجَرَةُ The tree [took root; or] grew, and became firm in its root.
2 [Hence,] أَصُلَ, Verbal.Noun as above, He was, or became, firm, or sound, of judgment; intelligent. (M: [and so, probably, in correct copies of the K; but in a MS. copy of the K and in the CK; and TA, instead of عَاقِل, the reading in the M, I find عَاقِب.])
3 Also, Verbal.Noun as above, It was, or became, firm, or sound, or good.
4 And, Verbal.Noun as above, It was, or became, eminent, noble, or honourable.

def.2 أَصَلَهُ, [Present.T and Verbal.Noun as in what follows next after this sentence,] He hit, or struck, its root, or foundation; that by being which it was what it was, or in being which it consisted; or its ultimate constituent.
2 And hence, أَصَلَهُ عِلْمًا, Present.T ـُ Verbal.Noun أَصْلٌ: or [with medd, and without علما]; He knew it completely, or thoroughly, or superlatively well, syn. قَتَلَهُ, [i. e.] قَتَلَهُ عِلْمًا, so that he was acquainted with its أَصْل [or root, or foundation, or its ultimate constituent, as is indicated in the A and TA]: or this is from أَصَلَةٌ, as meaning “a certain very deadly serpent;” [whence the phrase,]
3 أَصَلَتْهُ الأَصَلَةُ, Verbal.Noun أَصْلٌ, The [serpent called] اصلة sprang upon him and slew him.

def.3 أَصِلَ, Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun أَصَلٌ, said of water, i. q. أَسِنَ; i. e. It became altered for the worse in its taste and odour, from fetid black mud therein: so says Ibn-'Abbád: and said of flesh-meat, it became altered in like manner.
