Full Definition

اعترفVIII He acknowledged it, or confessed it, namely, a misdeed, or a thing; and so به and لَهُ, namely, his misdeed [&c.]; [for] sometimes they put عَرَفَ in the place of اعترف; and so عَرَفَهُ : [ الإِحْسَانِ (occurring in the K voce شُكْرٌ &c.) means The acknowledgment, or confession, of beneficence; thankfulness, or gratitude:] and one says, مَا لأَِحَدٍ يَصْرَعُنِى i. e. ما أَعْتَرِفُ, meaning I do not acknowledge [any one that will throw me down]: this was said by an Arab of the desert.
2 اعترف إِلَىَّ He acquainted me with his name and condition. And اعترف لَهُ He described himself to him in such a manner as that he would certify himself of him thereby. [See also 5.]
3 اعترف also signifies He described a thing that had been picked up, and a stray-beast, in such a manner as that he would be known to be its owner.
4 And you say, اِعْتَرَفْتُ القَوْمَ, or فُلَانًا, I asked the people, or party, or such a one, respecting a subject of information, in order that I might know it.
