Full Definition

الاِسْتِعْدَآءُX signifies The asking, or demanding, of aid, or assistance, and of vengeance, or avengement, and of strengthening: and also the act of aiding, or assisting. You say, استعداهُ He asked, or demanded, of him aid, or assistance, عَلَيْهِ against him, namely, one who wronged him: [or,] accord. to El-Khuwárezmee (who derives it from العَدِىُّ signifying الرَّجَّالَةُ الَّذِينَ يَعْدُونَ), استعدى [or استعدى القَاضِىَ] means he asked, or demanded, of the judge, that he should make his foot-messengers to run in quest of his antagonist and to bring him, for the purpose of exacting from him his right, or due. (De Sacy's Chrest. Arabe, sec. ed., iii. 100. [And an explanation similar to this, but not a similar derivation, is indicated in the Mgh by an explanation of أَعْدَاهُ, q. v.])
