Full Definition

الجُمْعُ , and جُمْعُ الكَفِّ, and الكَفِّ, and الكَفِّ, The fist; the hand clinched; the hand with the fingers put together and contracted in the palm: pl. أَجْمَاعٌ. You say, ضَرَبْتُهُ بِجُمْعِ كَفِّى I beat him, or struck him, with my fist. And ضَرَبُوهُ بِأَجْمَاعِهِمْ They beat him, or struck him, with their [clinched] hands. And جَآءَ فُلَانٌ بِقُبْضَةٍ مِلْءٍ جُمْعِهِ Such a one came with a quantity in his grasp as much as filled his clinched hand. And جُمْعُ الكَفِّ signifies [also] The quantity that a hand grasps, of money &c.
2 أَخَذْتُ فُلَانًا بِجُمْعِ ثِيَابِهِ, and ثِيَابِهِ, i. e. [I took, or seized, such a one] by the part where his garments met together.
3 أَمْرُهُمْ بِجُمْعِ, and , Their affair, or case, is concealed, undivulged by them, and unknown by any one [beside them].
4 ذَهَبَ الشَّهْرُ بِجُمْعٍ, and , The month passed away wholly; all of it.
5 هِىَ مِنْ زَوْجِهَا بِجُمْعٍ, and , She is as yet undevirginated, or undeflowered, by her husband. And طُلِّقَتْ بِجُمْعٍ, or , She was divorced being yet a virgin. And مَاتَتْ بِجُمْعٍ, and , and , She died a virgin: or it signifies, or signifies also, she died being with child; whether suffering the pains of parturition or not: or heavy with child: occurring in the first sense, or, as some say, in the last, in a trad., in which it is said that a woman who so dies is a martyr: it properly signifies she died with something comprised in her, not separated from her, whether it were a burden in the womb, or her maidenhead: [the pl. is أَجْمَاعٌ; for] you say, مَاتَتِ النِّسَآءُ بِأَجْمَاعٍ The women died [being virgins: or] being with child. You say also, نَاقَةٌ جُمْعٌ A she-camel with young. And اِمْرَأَةٌ جَامِعٌ A woman with child.
