Full Definition

تَوَقَّفَV He paused, or waited, at the thing; syn. تَلَبَّثَ. (Accord. to some copies of the K, تَثَبَّتَ.] You say, تَوَقَّفْتُ عَلَى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ I paused, or waited, at this thing, or affair. And تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى جَوَابِ كَلَامِهِ [He paused, or waited, at the reply to his speech]. And hence, تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى السَّمَاعِ He limited, or restricted, himself to what had been heard [from the Arabs, with respect to a construction, &c.]; did not transgress it, or overstep it. See مُتَوَقَّفٌ.
2 تَوَقَّفَ فِيهِ He paused upon it; he hesitated, or deliberated, respecting it. Of very frequent occurrence.
3 تَوَقَّفَ عَنِ الأَمْرِ He held, refrained, or abstained, from the thing, or affair.
4 تَوَقَّفَ عَلَى كَذَا It rested, was founded or grounded, depended, or was dependent, upon such a thing. You say, of knowledge, يَتَوَقَّفُ حُصُولُهُ عَلَى كَذَا Its origination rests upon such a thing; as, for instance, speculation.
