جَائِحَةٌ

Full Definition

جَائِحَةٌ [fem. of جَائِحٌ, q. v.: and hence, as a subst.,] A bane, a pest, a calamity, or the like, or a great calamity, that destroys, or extirpates, men's property, or cattle; as drought, or dearth; or civil war, or conflict and faction, and the like: drought, or dearth, that destroys, or extirpates, men's property, or cattle; as also جَوْحَةٌ : or a calamity that befalls a man, and destroys all his property, or cattle: or severe drought or dearth, that destroys, or extirpates, men's property, or cattle: sometimes it is the effect of large hail; and sometimes, of excessive cold or heat: or a blast, or blight, or calamity arising from the atmosphere, that destroys the fruits, or some thereof; only relating to fruits: pl. جَوَائِحُ. It is said in a trad., أَمَرَ بِوَضْعِ الجَوَائِحِ, which is an elliptical phrase, meaning He commanded to remit the poor-rate in respect of things affected by a blast, or blight, namely, property, or fruits, so affected; i. e., that no portion thereof, or of the remains thereof, should be taken for the poor-rate.
