جَدْبٌ
Drought, barrenness, or dearth; contr. of
خِصْبٌ; i. q.
مَحْلٌ, i. e. drought, or suspension of rain, and dryness of the earth; dryness and barrenness of the earth: and
جِدَبٌّ is a name, or subst., for الجَدْبٌ, meaning المَحْلُ; as in the saying of the rájiz, cited by Sb,
2 Also A place, or a country, or region, affected with drought, barrenness, or dearth; or with drought, and dryness of the earth; and so جَدِيبٌ and جَدُوبٌ and مَجْدُوبٌ , the last derived from جُدِبَ though this verb has not been used, and مُجْدِبٌ , of which the pl. is مَجَادِيبُ. You say also أَرْضٌ جَدْبٌ [in which جدب is an Verbal.Noun and therefore applicable to a fem. subst.] and جَدْبَةٌ and and جَدِيبٌ and جَدُوبٌ and , of which last the pl. is مَجَادِيبُ, A land affected with drought, &c.: and أَرْضُونَ جُدُوبٌ, as though to each part were applied the term جَدْبٌ [used as a subst.] from which is formed the pl. جُدُوبٌ, and جَدْبٌ, which is here an Verbal.Noun used as an epithet [and therefore applicable to a pl. subst.], lands affected with drought, &c. And فَلَاةٌ [fem. of أَجْدَبُ] A desert affected with drought, &c.; in which is neither little nor much, neither pasture nor herbage. And فُلَانٌ الجَنَابِ Such a one is environed by a tract affected with drought, &c. Such a one is ungenerous or illiberal or inhospitable. See art. جنب.]) And سَنَةٌ جَدْبَةٌ (K in art. جرز) and جَدُوبٌ عَامٌ [A year of drought, &c.]. See also أَجَادِبُ, in two places.
def.2 Also i. q. عَيْبٌ [A vice, fault, defect, &c.]; a signification which may be either proper or tropical.
