جَدْىٌ

Full Definition

جَدْىٌ A kid: or a male kid; the female being called عَنَاقٌ: or a kid in his first year; not yet a year old: one should not say جِدْىٌ; this being a bad dial. var.: pl. أَجْدٍ and جِدَآءٌ and جِدْيَانٌ: جَدَايَا [as pl. of جَدْى] is not allowable.
2 Hence, as being likened thereto, الجَدْىُ A certain star, [the star a of Ursa Minor, commonly called the pole-star,] that revolves with بَنَاتُ نَعْشٍ, by the side of the [north] pole, by which the kibleh is known, or according to which the kibleh is turned; the bright star at the extremity of the tail of the Lesser Bear; the star of the kibleh; also called جَدْىُ الفَرْقَدِ; and called by the astronomers , in the dim. form, to distinguish it from what next follows. [See also القُطْبُ.]
3 Hence also, A certain sign of the Zodiac; [namely, Capricornus;] the tenth of the signs of the Zodiac; that next to the دَلْو; unknown to the Arabs [of the classical times]. This and the former together are called [the] جَدْيَانِ.
