Full Definition

جِزْيَةٌ The tax that is taken from the free nonMuslim subjects of a Muslim government; whereby they ratify the compact that ensures them protection: [from جَزَى;] as though it were a compensation for their not being slain: [or from the Persian گِزْيَهْ:] and also, a land-tax; a tax that is paid by the owner of land: pl. جِزًى or ↓جِزْىٌ, or both, [but the latter is, properly speaking, a coll. gen. n.,] and جِزَآءٌ, (K, [in the CK, erroneously, جَزاءٌ,]) like كِتَابٌ.
