جَيْأَلُ

Root: جأل

Full Definition

جَيْأَلُ The ضَبُع [or female hyena]; a name thereof, of the measure فَيْعَلُ, determinate without ال imperfectly decl.; as also جَيْأَلَةُ , accord. to Ks; and جَيَلُ, without ء, the ى not being changed into ا as in نَابٌ and the like because the ء, though literally suppressed, is considered as though meant to be retained, and because the ى is considered as though meant to be quiescent; and الجَيْأَلُ, like the first, but with ال.
2 Also, الجَيْأَلُ, accord. to Ibn-Es-Seed, The wolf: but MF deems this strange.
