حَاضِنٌ

Full Definition

حَاضِنٌ A man who has the charge of [carrying and] rearing, or nourishing, or fostering, a child: and حَاضِنَةٌ A woman who has the charge of a child, who carries him, and takes care of him, and rears, or nourishes, or fosters, him: pl. of the former حُضَّانٌ [and حَضَنَةٌ , agreeably with a general rule: and pl. of the latter, also agreeably with a general rule, حَوَاضِنُ].
2 [Hence,] هُوَ مِنْ حَضَنَةِ العِلْمِ, i. e. علمته [a mistranscription for غِلْمَتِهِ, meaning He is of the servants of learning, or science].
3 حَمَامَةٌ حَاضِنٌ and حَاضِنَةٌ A pigeon sitting [or brooding] upon its eggs, protecting them with its two sides; or pressing, or compressing, its eggs beneath its wing.
4 [Hence,] سُفْعٌ حَوَاضِنُ [pl. of حَاضِنَةٌ] Three stones for supporting a cooking-pot, cleaving to the ground, with the ashes.
5 حَاضِنَةٌ also signifies A man's wife: and so حَاصِنَةٌ.
6 And a palm-tree (نَخْلَةٌ) having short racemes: or one of which the racemes have come forth, and quitted their spathes, and are short in their fruit-stalks.
