Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon

حِرَّةٌ

Root: حر

Full Definition

حِرَّةٌ : see حَرٌّ.
2 Also A heat, or burning, in the throat: when it increases, it is termed حَرْوَةٌ. [See also حَرَارَةٌ.]
3 Thirst: or the heat and burning of thirst: it may be said that it is with kesr [instead of fet-h ] for the purpose of its being assimilated in form to قِرَّةٌ, with which it occurs. One says, رَمَاهُ ٱللّٰهُ بِالحِرَّةِ تَحْتَ القِرَّةِ May God afflict him by thirst with cold: and بِالحِرَّةِ وَالقِرَّةِ by thirst and cold. And أَشَدُّ العَطَشِ حِرَّةٌ عَلَى قِرَّةٍ The most severe of thirst is thirst in a cold day. And حِرَّةٌ تَحْتَ قِرَّةٍ Thirst in a cold day: a prov., applied to him who makes a show of the contrary of that which he conceals; or who makes a show of friendship while he conceals hatred.
