خَطِفَهُI , Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun خَطْفٌ; this is the approved form of the verb; and خَطَفَهُ, Present.T ـِ Verbal.Noun as above; a form of the verb mentioned by Akh, but this is rare, or bad, scarcely, or not at all, known; and , and تخطّفهُ ; He seized it; or took it, or carried it off, by force: or he did so quickly; snatched it away: and خطّف has been said to imply repetition of the action [unless it be a variation of اختطف as in a case mentioned below]; but this is strange, and not known on any other authority than that of the “ Akáneem et-Taaleem ” by El-Khuweiyee, a disciple of El-Fakhr Er-Rázee. Hence, in the Kur [xxix. 67], النَّاسُ مِنْ حَوْلِهِمْ [And men are carried off by force from around them].
2 [And hence,] هٰذَا سَيْفٌ يَخْطَفُ الرَّأْسَ [This is a sword that will strike off the head].
3 And خَطِفَ البَصَرَ and خَطَفَهُ, said of lightning, and of a ray of light, and of a [glistening] sword, and of any polished body, It took away the sight: and ↓اُخْتُطِفَ بَصَرُهُ His sight was suddenly taken away. (M and K in art. ملس.) It is said in the Kur [ii. 19], يَكَادُ البَرْقُ يَخْطَفُ أَبْصَارَهُمْ [The lightning almost taketh away their sight, lit. sights]: Yoo read يَخْطِفُ ابصارهم; and so did Aboo-Rejà and Mujáhid: and some read ↓يِخِطِّفُ, and ↓يَخَطِّفُ, originally يَخْتَطِفُ, accord. to the opinion of the Basrees, disputed by Fr, but confirmed by Zj.
4 And خَطِفَ السَّمْعَ, Present.T ـَ said of a devil, He stole [an opportunity of] hearing [the speech of the angels, from the confines of the lowest Heaven; or snatched it]; as also ↓اختطفهُ: the two verbs being like نَزَعَهُ and اِنْتَزَعَهُ. Hence, in the Kur [xxxvii. 10], ↓إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ الخَطْفَةَ Except him who steals the [opportunity of] hearing: or who snatches unawares and by stealth, or hears and snatches, the speech of the angels: EL-Hasan read الّا من الخطفة ↓خَطَّفَ, originally ٱخْتَطَفَ: and another reading, ascribed to him and others, is ↓خِطِّفَ; but this is very weak.
5 خَطِفَ, Present.T ـَ; and خَطَفَ, Present.T ـِ; Verbal.Noun خَطَفَانٌ; thus in all the copies of the K, but correctly خَطْفٌ, as in the L; said of a camel, He went along quickly. And مَرَّ يَخْطَفُ خَطْفًا مُنْكَرًا He went along at a quick rate [such as was deemed strange, or disapproved]. And خَطِفَتِ السَّفِينَةُ, and خَطَفَت, The ship sailed, or voyaged: you say, خَطِفَتِ اليَوْمَ مِنْ عُمَانَ She sailed,. or voyaged, to-day, from 'Omán.
