دَائِنٌ
A debtor; as also
مَدِينٌ and
مَدْيُونٌ , this last of the dial. of Temeem, and
مُدَانٌ and
مُدَّانٌ : or all of these, or
مَدْيُونٌ , one much in debt: and
مُدَّانٌ , constantly in debt: and دَائِنٌ signifies one who takes, or receives, a loan, or the like; who borrows; or who takes, or receives, or buys, upon credit: and also one who repays a debt: thus bearing two contr. meanings: or also one who gives, or grants, credit; or sells upon credit: pl. دَائِنُونَ, with which
دِينٌ is syn. [as a quasi-pl. n.], as in the saying of a poet,
[And the people, except us, were debtors].وَكَانَالنَّاسُ إِلَّا نَحْنُ دِينَا
