زَافِرَةٌ

Full Definition

زَافِرَةٌ : see what next precedes.
2 Also A bulky camel; and so زُفَرٌ : because he carries loads, or burdens.
3 The كَاهِل [or withers, or upper portion of the back, next the neck,] with what is next to it. [Because loads are borne upon it.]
4 The side, or angle, (رُكْن,) of a building, upon which it [mainly] rests, or is supported: pl. زَوَافِرُ. [Hence the expression] لِمَجْدِهِمْ زَوَافِرُ Their glory has props that strengthen it.
5 A man's aiders, or assistants, and his kinsfolk, or tribe, syn. عَشِيرَة, as also زَوَافِرُ; because they bear his burdens: his aiders, or assistants, and particular friends. You say, هُمْ زَافِرَتُهُمْ عِنْدَ السُّلْطَانِ They are the persons who undertake and perform their business with the Sultán. And هُوَ قَوْمِهِ, and زَافِرَتُهُمْ, also, عِنْدَ السُّلْطَانِ, He is the chief of his people, and the bearer of their burdens, with the Sultán. See also زُفَرٌ, in two places.
6 A company, or congregated body, of men; as also زُفَرٌ .
7 An army; or a collected portion thereof; or a troop of horse; syn. كَتِيبَةٌ, as also زُفَرٌ .
8 [A rib: pl. زَوَافِرُ.] You say فَرَسٌ شَدِيدُ الزَّوَافِرُ A horse having strong ribs.
9 A bow: pl. زَوَافِرُ: so called as being likened to a rib: [or perhaps from its sound.]
10 The part of an arrow exclusive of the feathers: or the part exclusive of two thirds, next the head: or the part from a little below the head to the head: or about a third part of an arrow, and of a spear. [Perhaps so called from its sound.]
