زَنِيمٌ

Full Definition

زَنِيمٌ , applied to a goat, [and app. to a sheep also,] Having [two wattles, such as are termed] زَنَمَتَانِ [of which see the sing., زَنَمَةٌ]; as also مُزَنَّمٌ .
2 Also, and مُزَنَّمٌ , One adopted among a people to whom he does not belong, to which some add, not being needed; as though he were a زَنَمَة among them: and i. q. دَعِىٌّ [as meaning likewise one who is adopted among a people or by a person ]; conjoined [with them or him]: thus the former was expl. by I 'Ab as used in the Kur ubi suprà: but Az says that the latter word has only the meaning assigned to it above, voce زَنِمٌ as an epithet applied to a camel. And the former word, Base, ignoble, or mean; known by his baseness, ignobleness, or meanness, or his evil character, like as the شَاة [i. e. sheep or goat] is known by its زَنَمَة: (S, TA: [in the latter of which is added, “ because the cutting of the ear is a mark: ” but by its زنمة is here meant “ its wattle; ” for the cutting of the ear of the camel is a mark of generous race:]) thus expl. by 'Ikrimeh as used in the Kur ubi suprà. And The son of an adulteress or a fornicatress.
3 Also A commissioned agent, a factor, or a deputy.
4 الأَبَدُّ الزَّنِيمُ The lion. (M and K in art. بد, q. v.)
