Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon

سَبَّةٌ

Root: سب

Full Definition

سَبَّةٌ i. q. اِسْتٌ [The podex, or the anus]: because it is discommended. [See also سِبٌّ.]

def.2 مَضَتْ سَبَّةٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ A space, or long space, of time passed; [thus termed] because time is always complained of; and so سَنْبَةٌ, in which the ن is [said to be] a substitute for the [former] ب of سَبَّةٌ, in like manner as it is substituted in the case of إِجَّاصٌ and إِنْجَاصٌ; because [it is asserted, though this is contradicted, that] there is no word of which the radical letters are سنب. And مَا رَأَيْتُهُ مُنْذُ سَبَّةٍ I have not seen him for, or during, a space, or long space, of time; like as you say مُنْذُ سَنْبَةٍ. And عِشْنَا بِهَا سَبَّةً and سَنْبَةً We lived in it a space, or long space, of time. And أَصَابَتْنَا سَبَّةٌ مِنَ الحَرِّ, and البَرْدِ, and الصَّحْوِ, and الرَّوْحِ, A period of some days' continuance [of heat, and of cold and of serene weather, and of gentle wind, betided us]. [The pl. is سِبَابٌ.] One says, الدَّهْرُ سِبَابٌ Time consists of vicissitudes; one turn is thus, and one is thus.
