Full Definition

شَطْءٌ and شَطَأٌ The فِرَاخ [or sprouts] of seed-produce, and of plants, or herbage, and of palm-trees: or the leaves thereof; i. e. of seed-produce: and the shoots that come forth from, or around, the bases, or stems, of plants, or herbage, or of trees: pl. أَشْطَآءٌ, or شُطُوْءٌ. أَخْرَجَ شَطْأَهُ, in the Kur xlviii. last verse, means That has put forth its فِرَاخ [or sprouts]: or, accord. to Akh, its extremity: or its ears, accord. to Fr; each grain, he says, producing ten, or eight, or seven: or, accord. to Zj, its plants: and some read , which is a dial. var.; and شَطَاهُ, and شَطَآءَهُ, and شَطَهُ, and شَطْوَهُ.
