صِنْدِيدٌ A courageous lord or chief; as also صِنْدِدٌ : or a great, or big, and courageous, lord or chief: or a great, or big, and courageous, king: or the former, or ↓ the latter, a noble lord or chief: or a liberal, bountiful, munificent, or generous, lord or chief: or a clement, or forbearing, lord or chief: a defender of an army: جَمَاعَةُ العَسْكَرِ, by which the pl. الصَّنَادِيدُ is expl. in the K, is a mistake for حُمَاةُ العَسْكَرِ, the words used by IAar: a nobleman: a great man: or a great chief: one who presides over a people and their affairs of importance and things in general: or a lord, or chief, eminent among his people, possessing the qualities of courage and liberality or munificence or generosity, who overcomes those that act with hostility and opposition towards him: pl. صَنَادِيدُ. Accord. to some, the ن is augmentative; and the word is derived from الصَّدُّ, “ the act of turning away; ” and seems to have been formed to denote an intensive signification. Also Overcoming, and great. دَآءُ الصَّنَادِيدِ is The disease called ذَاتُ الجَنْبِ. (T in art. جنب.)
2 Also A calamity; a misfortune; or a great, or formidable, event: pl. as above. Hence the saying of El-Hasan, نَعُوذُ بِٱللّٰهِ مِنْ صَنَادِيدِ القَدَرِ We seek protection by God from the calamities, &c., of destiny: or from its great and overpowering afflictions.
3 Also, or صِنْدِدٌ , An isolated ledge of a mountain.
4 رِيحٌ صِنْدِيدٌ Violent wind.
5 بَرْدٌ صِنْدِيدٌ Vehement, or intense, cold.
6 One says, مَرَّتْ عَلَيْنَا صَنَادِيدُ مِنْ بَرْدٍ Times of intense cold befell us. [See also another ex. voce صَخَدَانٌ.]
7 And حَرٌّ صِنْدِيدٌ Vehement, or intense, heat. One says يَوْمٌ حَامِى الصِنْدِيدِ, or الصَّنَادِيدِ, A day of vehement, or intense, heat.
8 غَيْثٌ صِنْدِيدٌ Rain consisting of large drops: or that falls in large quantity: pl. غُيُوثٌ صَنَادِيدُ. And one says, رَمَتِ السَّمَآءُ بِصَنَادِيدِ البَرَدِ The sky cast down large hail-stones.
9 الصَّنَادِيدُ مِنَ السَّحَابِ Great clouds: or clouds that pour forth much rain, in large drops.
