Full Definition

ضَفَرَI , Present.T ـِ Verbal.Noun ضَفْرٌ, He plaited, braided, or interwove, hair, &c., or the like, or a [lock of hair, such as is called] ذُؤَابَة, and a [girth of thongs such as is called] نِسْع, in a wide form; as also ضفّر , Verbal.Noun تَضْفِيرٌ: he made hair into ضَفَائِر, [pl. of ضَفِيرَةٌ,] each ضَفِيرَة consisting of three or more distinct portions.
2 He twisted a rope or cord.
3 ضَفَرَتْ شَعَرَهَا, Present.T ـِ Verbal.Noun as above, said of a woman, She gathered together her hair.
4 And ضَفَرَ, from the same verb in the first of the senses expl. above, He made, or constructed, a [dam of the kind called] ضَفِيرَة.
5 ضَفْرٌ also signifies The building with stones without [the cement called] كِلْس and without clay. You say, ضَفَرَ الحِجَارَةَ حَوْلَ بَيْتِهِ [He built the stones around his house, or tent, without mortar or clay].
6 ضَفَرَ البَعِيرَ العلَفَ, Verbal.Noun ضَفْرٌ, He put the fodder into the mouth of the camel, against his will. And ضَفَرَ الفَرَسَ لِجَامَهُ, or ضَفَرَ الدَّابَّةَ, Present.T ـِ Verbal.Noun ضَفْرٌ, He put the bit into the mouth of the horse, or of the beast.
