Full Definition

عِتْقٌ [mentioned above as an Verbal.Noun and also as a simple subst. ] i. q. نَجَابَةٌ [app. as a quality of a horse and the like, meaning Generousness, excellence, or swiftness: see 1, first and second sentences].
2 And i. q. كَرَمٌ [Generousness, generosity, or nobility]; as in the saying, مَا أَبْيَنَ العِتْقَ فِى وَجْهِ فُلَانٍ [How manifest is generousness, &c., in the face of such a one!].
3 And i. q. شَرَفٌ [Highness, or eminence, of rank or condition].
4 Also Beauty, or comeliness.
5 And The state, or condition, of freedom; contr. of slavery.
6 [And Oldness: in which sense,] accord. to some, عِتْقٌ and عُتْقٌ relate to inanimate things, as wine and dates; and قِدَمٌ relates to inanimate things and also to animals.

def.2 Also, and عُتُقٌ , A species of trees from which Arabian bows are made: the name being meant to imply the excellence of the bow [made therefrom].
