Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon

عَرَبِىٌّ

Root: عرب

Full Definition

عَرَبِىٌّ ; and العَرَبُ العَرَبِيَّةُ: see العَرَبُ, first quarter.
2 لَا تَنْقُشُوا فِى خَوَاتِيمِكُمْ عَرَبِيًّا, in a trad., or, as some relate it, , means Engrave not on your signets مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللّٰهِ; because this was engraved on the Prophet's own signet: as though he had said, نَبِيًّا عَرَبِيًّا [an Arabian prophet]; meaning himself. Omar said, لَا تَنْقُشُوا فِى خَوَاتِيمِكُمُ [Engrave not on your signets Arabic]: and Ibn-'Omar disapproved of engraving on a signet words from the Kur-án. [عَرَبِىُّ الوَجْهِ often occurs in post-classical works as meaning Having an Arab face; i. e. long-faced; opposed to تُرْكِىُّ الوَجْهِ.]
3 See also عِرَابٌ, in two places.

def.2 Also A white barley, the ears of which are bifurcate [so I render, agreeably with the TK, سُنْبُلُهُ حَرْفَانِ]: it is wide, and its grain is large, larger than the grain of the barley of El- 'Irak, and it is the best of barley.
