Full Definition

عَوِيلٌ A wailing; i. e. a raising of the voice with weeping; as also عَوْلٌ and عَوْلَةٌ : or a weeping and crying out: and sometimes it signifies a cry, or voice, from the chest, without weeping: and sometimes عَوْلَةٌ signifies the burning sensation of grief and of love, without a raising of the voice and without weeping. [See also عَوَّالٌ.]
