فُرْقَانٌ

Full Definition

فُرْقَانٌ , originally an Verbal.Noun Anything that makes a separation, or distinction, between truth and falsity.
2 Hence, الفُرْقَانُ signifies The Kur-án; as also الفُرْقُ .
3 And The Book of the Law revealed to Moses, in which a distinction is made between that which is allowable and that which is forbidden.
4 And Proof, evidence, or demonstration.
5 And The time a little before daybreak: or the dawn. One says, طَلَعَ الفُرْقَانُ [The dawn rose].
6 And Aid, or victory: so, accord. to IDrd, in the phrase يَوْمَ الفُرْقَانِ in the Kur [viii. 42]: or by this phrase is meant The day of Bedr, in which a distinction was made between right and wrong.
7 And The cleaving of the sea: so it means [accord. to some] in the Kur ii. 50.
8 And Boys: such the people of the olden time used to make witnesses [in law-suits or the like].
