فَرْقَدٌ

Full Definition

فَرْقَدٌ A calf: accord. to Aboo-Kheyreh, after he has become about two months old: (TA voce عِجْلٌ:) or the calf of a wild cow; as also فُرْقُودٌ : fem. فَرْقَدَةٌ.
2 And الفَرْقَدُ and The asterism (نَجْم) by which one directs his course by sea and by land; two stars [b and y of Ursa Minor]; also called الفَرْقَدَانِ; thus in a verse cited voce إِلَّا; they are two stars near the قُطْب [or pole-star]; two stars that never set, revolving round the جَدْى [or pole-star], both in Ursa Minor; the two bright stars of the four that form the angles of a quadrilateral figure in Ursa Minor; also called by the Arabs الفَرَاقِدُ [which is the pl. of الفَرْقَدُ].
