Full Definition

مِئْذَنَةٌ (which may also be pronounced مِيذَنَةٌ, Msb) The place [generally a turret of a mosque] upon which the time of prayer is notified, made known, or proclaimed; i. q. مَنَارَةٌ [which has this meaning and others also]; as also مُؤْذَنَةٌ : or it signifies, or signifies also, i. q. مَنَارَةٌ: and صَوْمَعَةٌ: [see these two words:] or i. q. مَنَارَةٌ, meaning صَوْمَعَةٌ; by way of comparison [to the turret first mentioned]: but as to مَأْذَنَةٌ , it is a vulgar word: the pl. is مَآذِنُ, agreeably with the original form of the sing.
