مِذْنَبٌ

Full Definition

مِذْنَبٌ A long tail.
2 And [hence, app. for ذُو مِذْنَبٍ], or مُذَنِّبٌ , A [lizard of the kind called] ضَبّ.
3 Also, or مَذْنَبٌ , like مَقْعَدٌ, and مِذْنَبَةٌ , A ladle; because it has a tail, or what resembles a tail: pl. مَذَانِبُ.
4 And A water-course, or channel of a torrent, in a tract at the foot of a mountain; not wide; or not very wide; or not very long and wide; as also ذِنَابَةٌ : the تَلْعَة is in the lower part of a mountain or in an acclivity: also a water-course or channel of a torrent, between what are termed تَلْعَتَانِ; (TA; [see تَلْعَةٌ, and see also مَدْفَعٌ;]) or this is termed تَلْعَة; or it is termed ذِنَابٌ , of which the pl. is ذَنَائِبُ: also a water-course, or channel of a torrent, [running] to a tract of land: and a rivulet, or streamlet, or the like thereof, flowing from one رَوْضَة [or meadow] to another, and separating therein; as also and ذِنَابَةٌ ; and the tract over which this flows is also called مِذْنَبٌ.
