نَحِيرٌ

Full Definition

نَحِيرٌ A camel [or other beast] stabbed, or stuck, in the مَنْحَر, where the windpipe (حُلْقُوم) commences, in the uppermost part of the breast; and مَنْحُورٌ signifies [the same: and] slaughtered: the former is masc. and fem., and the fem. is also نَحِيرَةٌ: pl. of نحير, and of نحيرة, نَحْرَى and نُحَرَآءُ and نَحَائِرُ.
2 A son devoted to be sacrificed: of the measure فَعِيلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ.

def.2 The first day of the month; [as also, app., الشَّهْرِ, and , and :] or the last thereof; as also : or the last night thereof; as also النَّحِيرٌ: or the last night thereof with its day [i. e. the day immediately following]; as also ; because it becomes opposite to that which is next after it, or because it reaches to the first part thereof [or of the following month]: pl. نَوَاحِرُ and نَاحِرَاتٌ, both extr. [as pls. of نَحِيرَةٌ, but reg. as pls. of نَاحِرَةٌ], [and app. نَحَائِرُ, being agreeable with rule as pl. of نَحِيرَةٌ: or] نَحَائِرُ الشَّهْرِ signifies i. q. نُحُورُهُ: see نَحْرٌ. You say also جَآءَ فِى نَحْرِ الشَّهْرِ, and نَاحِرَتِهِ, and نَحِيرَتِهِ, [app. signifying He came on the first day of the month.] And مَا أَرَاهُ إِلَّا فِى نُحُورِ الشُّهُورِ, and نَوَاحِرِهَا, and نَحَائِرِهَا, [app., I see him not save on the first days of the months.]
