Full Definition

نَشَدَI , Present.T ـُ Verbal.Noun نَشْدٌ and نِشْدَةٌ and نِشْدَانٌ, or these two are simple substs., He raised his voice in seeking for, or after, a stray-beast, or beast that had been lost; he called out and inquired respecting it; he cried it: or he sought for, or after, it: and [in like manner] he asked, or desired, to be directed to it.
2 Also, He made known, or gave information of, a stray-beast, or beast that had been lost; and so : thus the latter verb [as well as the former] bears two contr. significations. See also نَاشِدٌ.
3 نَشَدَ He sought, sought for or after, or desired, a thing.
4 نَشَدَهُ He asked, begged, or besought, him.
5 نُشِدَ He was asked, begged, or besought. See 6: and 4.
6 نَشَدَهُ, (Present.T ـُ L,) Verbal.Noun نِشْدَةٌ [and نَشْدَةٌ ] and نِشْدَانٌ; and , Verbal.Noun مُنَاشَدَةٌ and نِشَادٌ; He adjured him.
7 نَشَدَهُ بِٱللّٰهِ He adjured him by God; accord. to most of the grammarians and lexicologists, with a desire of conciliating him.
8 نَشَدَهُ, (Present.T ـُ T, S,) Verbal.Noun نَشْدٌ, He said to him نَشَدْتُكَ ٱللّٰهَ, which signifies I conjure, beg, or beseech, thee by God; as though thou remindedst him of God, and he remembered; as also أَنْشُدُكَ ٱللّٰهَ, and بِٱللّٰهِ, and ٱللّٰهَ, and باللّٰه: originally, I conjure thee by God, raising my voice: or it signifies I remind thee of God, conjuring; and originally, I beseech of thee by God; the thing for which one conjures being preceded by إِلَّا or what is syn. therewith, [as لَمَّا,] or by an interrogative or imperative or prohibitive: or it signifies I remind thee of God, desiring to conciliate thee; as also نَشَدْتُكَ بِٱللّٰهِ: or نشدتك اللّٰه, Verbal.Noun نِشْدَةٌ and نَشْدَةٌ and نِشْدَانٌ, signifies I adjure thee by God; as also بِٱللّٰهِ; or this latter is erroneous: and so signifies نَشْدَكَ ٱللّٰهَ; in which نَشْد is said to be originally نَشْدَة, an Verbal.Noun put in the place of the verb, or نشدك اللّٰه is a phrase of unpremeditated formation, like قَعْدَكَ ٱللّٰهَ and عَمْرَكَ ٱللّٰهَ; or this phrase, which occurs in a trad., may be incorrectly transmitted, and should perhaps be أَنْشُدُكَ ٱللّٰهَ: or نَشَدَهُ signifies he said to him نَشَدْتُكَ بِٱللّٰهِ والرَّحِمِ [I conjure thee, or adjure thee, by God and relationship; &c.]: I beg, or beseech, thee by God, and by relationship, raising my voice.
9 نَشَدَ He remembered God.
10 He knew, or was acquainted with, a person.
11 نَشَدَهُ عَهْدَهُ, Present.T ـُ He reminded him of his compact, covenant, engagement, or promise.
